My Analysis of the Nifty Consumer Durables Index
The Nifty Consumer Durables Index is an interesting measure of consumer sentiment and discretionary spending in India in my view. It is formulated to monitor the performance of leading 15 companies in the consumer durables sector.
The index is structured using a Periodic Capped Free Float market capitalization methodology. This is especially crucial to this index, because it guards against the impact of the biggest stock (Titan Company), and makes the index more stable. In my analysis, I will be looking at Total Returns Index due to the need to have an inclusive picture of performance, dividends inclusive.
Key Performance & Fundamental Metrics
These are my main findings in terms of the vital statistics of the index. The 5-year CAGR is so high, which means it is performing well. But even the huge P/E ratio standing at 69.62 is a solid indication that the market has huge growth prospects crystallised into the prices of commodities.

To better understand the index, I've visualized its performance and current composition. The historical chart shows a powerful, long-term growth story, reinforcing the theme of India's rising consumption. The top constituents chart reveals the incredible dominance of Titan Company, which makes up over a third of the index even with capping rules in place.

My Notes on the Index Methodology
The rules for this index are straightforward, focusing on capturing the most significant players in the consumer durables industry.
- Eligibility Universe: Companies must be part of the Nifty 500 and belong to the Consumer Durables Industry.
- Selection: The final 15 companies are selected based on their free-float market capitalization.
- Weight Capping: A single stock's weight is capped at 33%, and the cumulative weight of the top 3 stocks is capped at 62% at the time of rebalancing.
- Rebalancing: The index is reconstituted on a semi-annual basis.
